AI Photo Organizer
Pluto Photos uses AI for the parts of photo organizing that are genuinely tedious by hand — finding people, finding a specific photo you can't recall the filename of, cutting out a background — and runs every one of those models on your own machine.
- 5 — local AI features: search, faces, albums, background & object removal
- 0 — photos ever sent to a cloud API
- CPU-based — no dedicated AI hardware required
AI That Runs on Your Machine, Not a Server
Every AI feature in Pluto Photos — face detection, natural-language search, background removal, object removal — uses a model bundled with the app and run through your own CPU. That's a real architectural difference from a cloud photo AI feature, not just a privacy talking point: there's no per-image cost to Pluto Photos for you using these features, so none of them are rate-limited, gated behind extra charges, or dependent on a queue.
Face Detection That Groups People Automatically
AI face detection finds every face across your library and groups them by person, so you label someone once and every past and future photo of them is findable. Detection and the underlying face-matching model both run locally.

Search in Plain Language
Contextual search understands a description, not just a filename or tag: "sunset over mountains", "birthday cake", "photos from my vacation". It's the same idea as an AI photo search feature in a cloud service, minus the upload step.
Smart Albums Built From Rules, Not Guesses
Smart albums combine face detection, dates, tags and location into rules that keep an album current on their own — "person is Dad, taken in the last year" stays accurate without you touching it again.
Background and Object Removal
Background removal gives you a clean transparent PNG in one click, no watermark, no per-image fee. Object removal paints out something distracting from a photo using AI inpainting to reconstruct what was behind it — the same category of tool as Generative Fill, running on your own hardware instead of in Adobe's cloud.

Questions
Do I need a GPU for the AI features?
No. They run on CPU.
Are the AI features accurate without internet access?
Yes — accuracy doesn't depend on a connection, since the same local model runs whether you're online or not.
Is there a limit on how many photos I can run AI features on?
No per-image limit or credit system. Pro includes unlimited use of the AI features across your library.
Does natural-language search understand any query?
It matches against visual and contextual content it was trained to recognize — common objects, scenes, and activities. It won't reliably find something extremely specific, like a particular brand of an object, the way a hand-applied tag would.
