Your Photos Stay on Your Computer
Import a folder, and Pluto Photos reads it, indexes it and generates thumbnails from it, all on your own machine. There's no background sync to a server, and nothing about browsing, searching or organizing your library requires being online. A connection is needed to activate a Pro license, and the app checks in with the license server every so often after that (roughly monthly) — but being offline when that check would normally happen doesn't stop you from using the app.
No Mandatory Cloud Upload
A lot of "photo organizer" software today is really a cloud storage product with an organizing layer on top — you get organizing features in exchange for your photos living on someone else's servers. Pluto Photos doesn't ask for that trade. Your library lives in the folder you chose, on the drive you chose, and that's the only copy the app knows about unless you set up your own backup.
AI Processing, Done Locally
Face detection, natural-language search and background removal all run as on-device machine learning inference using models that ship with the app. None of them send a photo anywhere to be processed — the trade most cloud photo AI makes (upload the image, get a result back) doesn't apply here, because there's no upload step in the pipeline at all.
Local Editing, Including AI Tools
The object removal and background removal tools in the editor are the same story: the AI model runs on your own machine, not in a cloud queue you wait in. There's no per-image fee and no rate limit, because there's no server-side cost to you using the feature.
Backups Are Still Your Responsibility — But There's a Tool for It
Being offline-first cuts both ways, and it's worth saying plainly: Pluto Photos doesn't maintain an off-site copy of your library for you, the way a cloud photo service does by default. If your drive fails and you have no backup, that's a real risk. Pluto Photos Pro includes Replication: define a rule once and it mirrors your photo folders to a backup drive automatically, syncing whenever you want. You still decide where that backup drive is — an external drive, a mapped NAS share, or a cloud-synced folder — but once the rule is set, you're not copying files over by hand.
Questions
Does Pluto Photos need internet to run?
No. Import, search, editing and AI features all work with no connection. A connection is needed to activate a Pro license and for the app's periodic (roughly monthly) license check, but being offline doesn't block you from using the app.
Is any photo ever sent to a server?
No. Photo library content never touches Pluto Photos' servers, for any feature — that includes importing a Google Takeout export (which reads a folder already on your computer) and Mobile Companion backup (which runs over your own Wi-Fi, phone-to-computer, not through any outside server). The only things that contact Pluto Photos' own servers at all are license activation/renewal checks and app update checks — never anything from your photo library.
What still requires a connection?
License activation, the periodic license check, and checking for app updates. Everything involving your actual photo library runs locally or, for Mobile Companion, over your own LAN.
Does offline mean I don't need backups?
No — if anything it matters more, since Pluto Photos doesn't hold a cloud copy of your library the way a cloud-first service does. The built-in Replication feature can mirror your photo folders to a backup drive automatically once you set the rule, which covers the most common backup need without requiring the cloud.
