  • Set the rule once

Rating ≥ 4 stars and shot in 2025 — the album fills itself, forever, no manual dragging.

  • Combine anything

Date, camera, rating, tags, color label, file type, GPS radius, a named face, file size — mix and match with AND/OR.

  • Never goes stale

Import new photos, change a rating, add a tag — every smart album re-evaluates instantly.

  • Built for real workflows

"Needs Editing" (color label red), "iPhone Shots" (camera contains "iPhone"), "Vacation Hawaii" (GPS + date range) — set up in seconds.

The Pluto Photos Create Smart Album dialog, with a name, an icon picker, and two rules: rating ≥ 5 stars and tag "Nature"
Two conditions, one album — and it stays current as your library grows.

Smart Albums in Pluto Photos are dynamic collections that automatically populate based on rules you define. Instead of manually dragging photos into folders, set your criteria once and let Pluto Photos do the work.

Example Smart Albums

  • "Best of 2025" — Rating ≥ 4 stars AND date in 2025
  • "iPhone Shots" — Camera contains "iPhone"
  • "Family Portraits" — Tag contains "family" AND face detected
  • "Vacation Hawaii" — GPS within 50km of Honolulu AND date June 2025
  • "Needs Editing" — Color label = Red

How Rules Work

Each smart album has one or more conditions connected with AND/OR logic. Conditions can filter by:

  • Date range — Year, month, specific date range
  • Camera/lens — Camera model, lens, focal length
  • Star rating — 1–5 stars, with ≥, ≤, or = operators
  • Tags — Contains, starts with, exact match
  • Color labels — Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple
  • File type — JPEG, PNG, RAW, HEIC, video
  • GPS location — Within radius of a point
  • Face — Contains a specific named person
  • File size — Greater than, less than
