Built Natively for Apple Silicon
Pluto Photos for Mac ships as an Apple Silicon build for M1 and later chips — it is not an Intel build running under Rosetta. That matters specifically for the AI features: face detection, contextual search and background removal are all local machine-learning inference, and running natively on Apple Silicon rather than emulated is what keeps them fast. Intel Macs aren't supported — Apple stopped selling them in 2023, and building for a shrinking, unaccelerated architecture isn't a good trade for the app's AI performance on the hardware almost everyone actually has.
A Photo Library That Isn't Tied to Your Apple ID
Apple Photos is a fine app, but it wants your library in iCloud Photos to unlock cross-device features, and iCloud storage is a recurring subscription once you pass 5GB. Pluto Photos keeps your library as files on your own drive: an external SSD, your internal storage, or a NAS share. There's no Apple ID requirement to use it, and no monthly storage tier to outgrow.
Migrating From the Photos App
Export your library from Apple's Photos app (File → Export → Export Unmodified Originals) to a folder, then point Pluto Photos at that folder to import it. Capture dates and GPS come from each photo's own EXIF data, so a straight file export preserves them without needing a special importer.
AI Search and Face Detection, Fully Local
AI photo search, face detection and background removal all run as on-device inference — nothing is uploaded to Apple, to Pluto Photos, or anywhere else for processing. That's the same privacy model as Apple's own on-device Photos ML, just without requiring iCloud to sync the results across devices, because there's no cross-device sync to begin with — each Mac (or PC) works against the library on its own drive.
